County Approves $450,000 for Purchase of Door Bluff Headland Park Expansion

At its Feb. 26 meeting, the Door County Board of Supervisors approved “bridge financing” of $450,000 for 72.63 acres of land for the Door Bluff Headland Park while Ben Nelson, county parks director, continues seeking grants to pay for the entirety of the piece of land. At an earlier meeting, the board had stipulated that county funds would not be used to purchase the land. The deadline for the purchase from the Hidding Trust is March 15. Although the trust was willing to extend the offer to July 15 if the county would also pay the annual tax burden of $830, Nelson said that date is still outside of one of the major grants he is seeking, which will not be announced until August. He added that $150,000 has already been awarded for the purchase, and he is confident grants will cover the entire cost. However, he said that should there be a shortfall, the Door County Land Trust has offered to conduct a capital campaign to make up the shortfall. Supervisors Jon Koch and Linda Wait voted against the proposal.
