County Board Fires Back at Legislature

The Door County Highway Committee sent a letter to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation today notifying the DOT that the county will not continue maintenance of the state highway system if Motion 352 passes as currently written. The committee’s letter reads as follows:

Should the provisions of Motion 352 which limit the ability of the County Highway Departments to perform work on County, Town, City or Village roadways and right of ways be approved as part of the State Budget, the Door County Highway Department will no longer perform routine maintenance of the State Highway system which includes lift bridge operations beginning January 1, 2012, unless one of the following should occur:

1. The provisions which limit the ability of the County Highway Departments to perform work on County, Town, City or Village roadways and right of ways be removed from the budget.

2. The Routine Maintenance Agreement be modified that provides a guaranteed total minimum compensation to the Door County Highway Department that fully funds the equipment, personnel, and facilities on a year round basis for performing the routine maintenance of the State Highway System. The County of Door will develop these costs as part of the negotiations with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
