Cross Country Ski Report as of Jan. 29

Potawatomi State Park: Good conditions. An additional three inches of snow accumulated between Jan. 25 and 27. The skate lanes and diagonal stride track were last groomed on Jan. 24. The skate lane has a firm base with two inches of cold slow powder on top. The diagonal stride track is well skied in, is two to three inches deep and remains firm. On the return Red Loop, between the last snowmobile crossing and the “do again” loop, there are several areas of six-inch deep drifted snow covering the skate lane and diagonal tracks. Skate and diagonal tracks both rated mostly good to fair in a few areas. With warmer weather ahead and future grooming plans, conditions should be better for this weekend.

Crossroads at Big Creek: Very good conditions. All trails were rolled and tracked the past weekend and the base is excellent. Skate lanes are great but due to some blowing and drifting the track sometimes gets filled in open areas. Skiing conditions will improve as the temperatures warm up. Friends of Crossroads will loan ski equipment and snowshoes for free on Sunday afternoons from 1 – 3 pm.

Whitefish Dunes State Park: Very good conditions. Last groomed on Jan. 25. New track set on all trails. Base is firm, deep and tracks are full depth. Considerable drifting in some areas along with wood debris here and there. The plan is to re-groom Feb. 5 and/or when there is new measurable snow.

Peninsula State Park: Red, blue and purple loops were all re-groomed as of Jan. 20 and 21 and are in very good condition. All other classic tracks (yellow, orange, green and white) were groomed on Jan. 19 and are in good condition. After grooming we received another inch of snow and this was skied in but not re-groomed. Plan ahead to take part in the annual Candlelight Ski as part of the Fish Creek Winter Games on Feb. 1.

Newport State Park: Good conditions. Single track for classic. Europe Bay and Newport trails are still in very good shape. Some debris in tracks. Europe Bay Trail near the Hotz site is wind blown.
