Crossroads at Big Creek Celebrates Wisconsin Science Festival 2016

Crossroads at Big Creek is dedicated to providing education in science, history and the environment, usually one topic at a time, but this week, all three disciplines will be featured on Oct. 26-29.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Crossroads will celebrate the Wisconsin Science Festival 2016.

On Oct. 26 at 6:30 pm, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap will be screened. This documentary “exposes the dearth of American female and minority software engineers and explores the reasons for this gender gap. CODE raises the question: what would society gain from having more women and minorities code?”

On Oct. 27 at 7 pm, there will be food science demonstrations with Dr. Tom Zinnen of UW-Extension. Zinnen’s hands-on activities, especially those based on foods and nutrition, are designed to develop science savvy. This will be held in the Collins Learning Center lab.

On Oct. 28 at 7 pm, there will be a multimedia presentation titled “The Real Stars of Harry Potter.” The presentation will focus on astronomy and the Harry Potter book series. Film clips, book talk and night sky viewing will make it a memorable evening. Meet at the Collins Learning Center.

On Oct. 29 at 1 pm, the Wisconsin Public Television documentary Hometown Stories – Door County will be screened on the big screen. Meet at the lecture hall of the Collins Learning Center.

All of these events are free and open to the public.

Crossroads is a community-supported institution including the Collins Learning Center, The Big Creek Preserve, the Cove Preserve and the Ida Bay Preserve. The learning center is open 2-4:30 pm daily. The business office of the Collins Learning Center will be closed until Oct. 26. Trails at Big Creek Preserve, Cove Preserve, and the Ida Bay preserve are open to the public.
