To those who view winter from the inside of a home or vehicle, the season can seem colorless, so go outside (unless there are dangerous wind chill readings). Crossroads at Big Creek encourages outdoor winter recreation. They maintain trails for cross-country skiing and created a multi-use trail system for those who hike, walk dogs, snowshoe or bike.
Funding for recreation equipment came from the proceeds of the Crossroads Trail Run and grants from the Raibrook Foundation. Over the years, the purchase of trail maintenance equipment has been underwritten, in part, by the Door County Silent Sports Alliance and the Door County Medical Center.
Trails (and the restrooms of the Collins Learning Center) are always open. The trails in the Big Creek Preserve are groomed. Trails in Ida Bay and The Cove preserves are open, but are not groomed nor are the parking areas cleared.
As conditions allow (when there’s adequate snow and the absence of wind chill warnings), the Ski for Free program will be offered Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3:30 pm. Crossroads lends skis or snowshoe equipment to residents and visitors of Door County for use at Big Creek Preserve. Volunteers from Friends of Crossroads and Door County Silent Sports will be on hand in the maintenance building to help fit the equipment on a first-come, first serve basis.
On Jan. 5 at 2 pm, Crossroads will hold a repeat screening of Wisconsin Public Television’s production, Wisconsin Winter from the Air. Fly over some of Wisconsin’s most beloved landmarks and travel inside some of the active pastimes that bring us out into the cold to explore. The screening, held at the Collins Learning Center, is free and open to the public.
On Jan. 8 at 6:30 pm, the Friends of Crossroads will hold a meeting and to plan the year’s volunteer opportunities. The meeting will take place in the lower level of the Collins Learning Center.
Crossroads at Big Creek is located at 2041 Michigan Street, just east of the roundabout in Sturgeon Bay. Trails at the Big Creek Preserve are groomed and the parking lot is cleared.
