Crossroads Celebrates Astronomy Day with Dedication Ceremony

Crossroads at Big Creek celebrates Astronomy Day 2012 with “A Celebration of the Sun,” on Oct. 20.

As part of the celebration, the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society will dedicate a sundial, a project of the Leadership Door County Class of 2012, at 1 pm in the Astronomy Campus of Crossroads. Jim Dufrane designed the artistic installation with mathematical assistance from Ray Stonecipher. Dufrane created the tiles that were installed by members of Leadership DC and DPAS.

Following the dedication, DPAS members, Friends of Crossroads and area teachers will lead activities celebrating the sun. Weather permitting, they will offer safe solar viewing, observatory tours, demonstrations, video programs on the 3-D Sun, and a fine art exhibit.

Participants will also enjoy ice cream sundaes and children will be able to win prizes.

Astronomy Day 2012 will be topped off with Night Sky Viewing in the Star Garden at 7 pm.

The Collins Learning Center at Crossroads, located at 2041 Michigan Street, is open daily 2 – 4:30 pm.
