Crossroads Hosts The Clearing Workshops

At their November meeting, Crossroads at Big Creek’s Board of Directors determined the education theme and the action goal for 2013 would be “Biodiversity.” By increasing the variety of trees and plant species on the land, wildlife and wildlife habitats will be healthier.

To learn about diversity, adult learners should consider enrolling in one of The Clearing’s winter classes to be held at Crossroads in January.

A four-week course called “Water and Wildlife” will be offered on Mondays, beginning Jan. 7, from 1:30 – 3 pm. Coggin Heeringa will lead the class, and explain why water quality is so important for insects, amphibians, birds and mammals.

On Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 8, Heeringa will also teach “Beyond Birding 101” from 10 am – 12 pm. This class will help intermediate bird watchers learn identification and behavior characteristics of Door County birds.

Tuition for each class is $50. For more information or to register, visit theclearing.org.

When there is adequate snow, Crossroads grooms trails for traditional cross-country and skate skiing and rolls trails for hikers/pet walkers. These trails are open every day (except in inclement weather); hikers are requested to stay off the designated ski trails.

Each Sunday afternoon, Crossroads holds a Community Ski. The community is invited to use the preserve’s skis and snowshoes for free. Loaner skis are available between 1:30 – 3:30 pm, and should be returned by dark.

The first Community Ski is set for Jan. 6; interested skiers should meet at the Collins Learning Center.

The Collins Learning Center at Crossroads, located at 2041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay, is open daily 2 – 4:30 pm. For more information call 920.746.5895 or visit http://www.crossroadsatbigcreek.org.
