Crossroads Kicks of 2010 Educational Programming

Crossroads at Big Creek will focus each of their educational themes throughout 2010 on the Niagara Escarpment, and Dean Volenberg, Agricultural Educator from University of Wisconsin Extension, will kick off these presentations on Jan. 11, at 7 pm with a Master Gardener Lecture that explores “Soil: The Unexplored Frontier.”

Volenberg explains, “Soil is one of the last unexplored frontiers – mainly because of its complicated communities of bacteria, fungi, animals, minerals, organic matter, and water. The first step to growing healthy nutritious plants is to understand your garden soil.”

Volenberg will discuss soil fertility and help gardeners understand how they can improve the nutritional value of their produce through proper management of soil.

“Soil scientist and nutritionist have theorized recently that soil may play an important part in our health,” explains Volenberg. “The soil provides plants with many of the essential nutrients to grow and survive, and in turn the plants provide us with nutrients we can not produce ourselves.”

Also, Sunday afternoons, snow permitting, Crossroads will continue their Community Ski. Between 1 – 3 pm, Friends of Crossroads loan out skis and snowshoes to anyone on a first come/ first serve basis.

The Collins Learning Center at Crossroads at Big Creek (located at 21041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay) is open 2 – 5 pm daily.

Trails are open to the public.
