The 2010 season of The Historical Village at The Crossroads at Big Creek will come to a close Sunday, Oct. 17.
The village will be open from 1:30 – 3:30 pm at no charge to visitors. Costumed interpreters will describe life on the village from 1880 to 1910. Blacksmiths will be on the grounds to demonstrate the techniques used to shape metal into tools and equipment during that time.
Joe Knaapen, a Civil War re-enactor, will lead a presentation on the Civil War. He will discuss the war from the perspective of the fighting man, describing the tools he used to live off the land, the clothing he wore, and the weapons he used in battle.
Door County had a population of about 3,000 when the Civil War began, and hundreds of its men walked or rode horses to enlist in Wisconsin regiments. Many Door County men served along the Mississippi River in the campaign to prevent the conflict from spreading to the western states and undeveloped territories.
The Historical Village, a project of the Door County Historical Society, is located kitty corner from the YMCA at 2041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay. For more information, call 920.746.5895.
