A Dark Irish Comedy, Taco Soup & More Weekend Plans

It’s a weekend for all musical tastes in Door County, whether you prefer Chicago altfolk, the sounds of low brass or rich Brooklyn harmonies. Fill in the gaps with a presentation by an impressive youth author and an afternoon of tasty soups to benefit a great local zoo.

Friday, February 24

Witty, Alt-Folk

Join Chicago-based trio Sons of the Never Wrong as they bring an evening of three-part harmonies, whimsical songs, oddball humor and spontaneous stories to the Door County Fire Company for the benefit of two great local programs: Door County Medical Center Life Direct and LEAP the Human Kindness Project. 7 pm.

Saturday, February 25

Final February Fest

The Peninsula Music Festival closes out its 2017 February Fest this weekend with a concert featuring its low brass section of Paul Bellino and Brad Ward on tenor/alto trombone; Terry Leahy, bass trombone; Charlie Schuchat on tuba. Enjoy the music of Renwick, Bach, Haller, Schumann, Sousa, Bee Gees, and more. 2 pm.

An Afternoon with Austin Claflin

Southern Door senior Austin Claflin dedicates an afternoon to discussing his recently published historical fiction novel Rebel and Roman, set during the Gallic War of 52 BC at the end of Julius Caesar’s campaign of conquest. Claflin has described the story as “a combination of Braveheart and Ben-Hur thrown into the time period of Gladiator.” 3 pm.

The Cripple of Inishmaan

Third Avenue Playhouse presents a reading of Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy to the stage during the final weekend of its Winter Play Reading Festival. The story is set on a small Aran Islands community off the west coast of Ireland in the 1930s, where residents eagerly anticipate the arrival of a Hollywood film crew interested in recording a documentary about life on the islands. No one is more excited, though, than an orphaned boy who must face his mean-spirited and rumor-starved community. 7:30 pm.

The Brother Brothers

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, twin brothers Adam and David Moss bring rich harmonies and thoughtful songs accompanied by guitar, cello, violin and banjo to the Door County Brewing Co. on Saturday night. 7 – 9 pm.

Sunday, February 26

Soup for the Zoo

Chicken parmesan, loaded baked potato, chicken booyah and taco are just a few options on the soup menu for this weekend’s ZoupArt in Kewaunee! This fundraiser for the Bruemmer Park Zoo will also feature student-made artwork. 11 am – 1 pm.
