“Day of the Dead” Call for Art

Artists interested in creating personal altars or urns for Peninsula School of Art’s “Day of the Dead” exhibition – on display from October 2 through November 14 – are requested to attend an informational meeting at the School, 3900 County Road F, Fish Creek, on Saturday, August 15, from 1 – 2:30 pm.

Space reservations for interested artists’ works is limited and required by September 1. The space reservation should include a brief written request with an altar or urn’s general theme, estimated space needed (from two to four foot wall sections), as well as an indication of a need for any display fixtures, such as pedestals.

Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) is an ancient Mexican festival, which honors the memory of departed loved ones and fallen heroes, while embracing the continuity of life. Traditionally held from October 31 through November 2, the oftentimes moving, yet whimsical celebration comes to life with artfully-created altars festooned with sugar skulls, marigolds and memorabilia – and feasting. Donations of perishable food items will be collected to benefit the Hispanic Resource Center in Sturgeon Bay.
