DCAL Artists Celebrate Eagle Bluff Lighthouse’s 50th Anniversary

As the dawn of the 20th century arrived, Fish Creek and Ephraim’s town-folk packed picnic lunches and visited the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse on Sunday afternoons. Constructed of Milwaukee City cream brick, the lighthouse in the woods was a charming destination, a social event.

Today, the idyllic history, beauty, and magic of the lighthouse continues through paintings rendered by the Door County Art League (DCAL) artists. On July 11, the DCAL painters will set up their easels in Eagle Bluff Lighthouse’s yard to capture the history of the 1868 building. Utilizing watercolor, pastels, oils, acrylics, or colored pencil, each artist will work plein air, of the mid-19th century style of the French impressionist artists.

“I am delighted to welcome the DCAL painters back to Eagle Bluff,” said lighthouse curator/manager Patti Podgers. “It was so exciting to arrive on a summer morning and be greeted by artists painting on the lighthouse lawn. We hope everyone will stop by to see the paintings and visit our Lighthouse.”

Seasonally the DCAL operates a gallery at the Top of the Hills Shops; a special exhibit of the lighthouse paintings is planned for this summer. For more information visit doorcountyartleague.org.

Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum is open for guided tours daily from 10 am – 4 pm; tours are available on the hour and half-hour through 3:30 pm. For more information or to schedule a group tour, contact Podgers at 920.495.7330 or 920.421.3636.
