DCAL Features Printmaker and Oil Painter Jo Watson

“Behind the English Garden,” oil on hardboard, by Jo Watson.

The Gallery of the Door County Art League is featuring artist Jo Watson for the week beginning July 11. Watson’s main mediums are fine art printmaking (Intaglio and Relief), oil painting, and textiles.

“Usually, I explore a variety of photographs looking for interesting shapes, patterns, textures, or themes to explore,” Watson said of her creative method. “I then play with the photos, mixing, cropping, and superimposing them in Photoshop until I see something interesting happening and then use this information as a basis for the project.”

The patterns and textures of nature are Watson’s favorite subjects for both her representational oil paintings and her abstract print works. She has also been experimenting with water mixable oils for painting and water-based inks in printmaking for their improved safety and nature-friendly characteristics.

The Door County Art League is comprised of painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters, photographers, woodworkers, fabric artists, and more. All types of original art produced by members are on display and available for sale at the gallery, located in the Top of the Hill Shops, Highway 42 and County F on Spring Road in Fish Creek. Business hours are 10 am – 5 pm daily, and a reception is planned for the fourth Saturday of each month, 3 – 5 pm, throughout the season.
