DCMM Releases 2012-2013 Speaker Series Programs

Dr. Lawson Brigham once commanded the Coast Guard icebreaker “Polar Sea.”

The Door County Maritime Museum announces the 2012-2013 Maritime Speaker Series program will consist of five programs beginning Nov. 10 with Dr. Lawson Brigham.

Brigham is one of the country’s leading experts on Arctic studies. He is currently the Professor of Geography & Arctic Policy at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks. A career U.S. Coast Guard officer, he commanded four Coast Guard cutters, including the polar icebreaker Polar Sea. His presentation will be a homecoming of sorts since Brigham was the first commanding officer of the Mobile Bay, which is home ported in Sturgeon Bay.

The series will return to normal Thursday evening programming on Nov. 29 when popular author Rochelle Pennington will return to the museum for a program titled “World War I Christmas Miracle.” This program delves into the story of the famous World War I Christmas truce, which is featured in her book, Christmas Gifts: Ten of the Greatest Ever Given. Her appearance is part of the museum’s Merry-Time Festival of Trees celebration.

After the holidays, the series resumes with programs the first Thursday of the month from January through March.

Programs are free, open to the public, and begin at 7 pm at the Sturgeon Bay museum. Donations are appreciated.
