DCY Featured Swimmers

Our two swimmers this week are both in the 9-10 age group. Reese Schauske and Jacob Norton had exceptional meets in Oshkosh this past weekend, with several best times and state-qualifying swims. Jacob won every race that he swam, in a very large group of 9-10 boys. Reese continues to steadily drop her times, hoping to qualify in several events at the state championships. Jacob and Reese are all-around swimmers, swimming several different stokes at an exceptional level. Both will most likely be on our state relays. Our 9-10 age group is a strength for our team, with most of the swimmers proficient at all four strokes.

Coaches notes: We are steadily preparing for year-end championship meets. At this time the practices focus on race pace training, mixed with no rest or several minutes of rest between optimal swim time trials. The intensity of practice is greatly increased with a slight decrease in yardage. This is really a second overload session with a final goal of a taper at the end of the season that is substantial. It is interesting to see some of the tapers that did/did not work for the high school boys sectional meets. It is quite clear whether or not the season was effectively planned and coached. You can look up the high school times on the WIAA website – interesting times. If our DCY high school-age boys were swimming in the sectionals, we would have won several events and we would be seated 1st or 2nd in the state meet. In fact, we have several swimmers that would be potential state champions. Their goal is to compete at the YMCA and USA state meet, and compete at the national meet in Greensboro, North Carolina.
