December Dickinson Series Features Marybeth Mattson

Marybeth Mattson is the featured poet in the UU Fellowship’s Dickinson Poetry Series on Dec. 14 at 7 pm.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay (UWGB), Mattson majored in creative writing, dabbled in fiction, but always returned to poetry as a second home of sorts. It was at college that she became enamored with slam poetry and spoken word, following recordings of Taylor Mali, Rives, and Saul Williams.

While at UWGB, Mattson served as Poetry Editor for the Sheepshead Review, a journal of the arts. This experience taught her to appreciate the purpose of poetry as much as the art of it. Her poetry instructor at UWGB, former Wisconsin Poet Laureate Denise Sweet, also influenced her.

“Some poetry is meant for the eye, and some for the ear,” said Mattson, “my poetry is for the ear.” She has recorded several of her own pieces and intends to release a ‘chap-disc.’

Mattson’s reading will include poetry as well as spoken word pieces and a couple original songs. To listen to recorded songs and poems by Mattson visit http://www.facebook.com/MarybethMusic.

The Dickinson Poetry Series presents the works of a recognized local or regional poet on the second Wednesday of each month. Following the featured poet, others in the audience are invited to read their works. The series is free, open to the public and provides a welcoming format for poets of all levels.

The UU Fellowship is located at 10341 Highway 42 in Ephraim. For more information call 920.854.7559 or visit http://www.uufdc.org.
