Dick Skare to Run for Assembly Again

Dick Skare, the Fish Creek restaurateur and Gibraltar Town Board supervisor, will run again for the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin’s 1st Assembly District seat in 2010.

He’ll challenge five-term incumbent representative Garey Bies (R – Sister Bay) who has not formally announced his candidacy, but when reached by phone in Madison said he “will definitely run again.” Bies said a formal announcement will come after the first of the year.

Skare surprised election watchers in 2008 when he gave Bies his closest race to date, losing by just 850 votes, 51 – 49 percent.

Skare will kick off his campaign with a Nov. 9 event at Andre’s Supper Club in Sturgeon Bay at 5:30 pm, followed by a Kewaunee County event on Nov. 11 at 5:30 pm at S and K Food and Spirits.

“The First District needs and deserves more effective leadership,” Skare said in his announcement. “Legislation being debated in Madison affects every single resident of the First District and their children and their children’s children. We cannot afford more of the same-old politics-before-all-else, heels-dug-in excuses for doing nothing.”

Bies railed against the Democrats in control of the legislature for the state’s budget problems.

“I hope people see that I’ve proven myself in spending and tax issues and they appreciate that,” Bies said. “I’ve been disgusted by what my Democratic colleagues have done since they took over, and I look forward to returning to the majority and setting this back on the right track.”
