Diverse Interpretations

What happens when two artists work side by side, painting their own perceptions of the natural world? That is the question posed by the upcoming show, “Friends A’Field,” featuring Door County artists Liz Maltman and Lynn Gilchrist at Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor.

“I invited Liz and Lynn to do this show because I knew they often draw and paint together,” said Margaret Lockwood, owner of Woodwalk Gallery. “I thought it would be fascinating for viewers to see two totally different interpretations of the same places.”

To create the work in the exhibition, the two artists worked together frequently from winter to summer last year. Their subject matter ranges from cityscape views of Sturgeon Bay to landscape paintings done throughout the county.

“For a while there we weren’t sure when the cold would end and we could work outdoors,” said Maltman. “There were some days we painted wearing four layers of clothing.”

“Like everyone else,” added Gilchrist, “a long winter made us even happier to see and paint the greens and colors of spring and summer.”

The two artists work in distinctly different styles but are united in their love of color. Their love of nature is also evident, in their artwork, and by their hobbies: running, biking and skiing.

Their friendship and mutual appreciation is apparent as they speak about each other’s work.

“Liz works fast and uses strong color,” said Gilchrist. “She applies her pastels boldly and with an imaginative sense of design. Her take on nature is so unique and lively.”

“Lynn’s work is beautiful,” says Maltman. “Her pastels are one of the reasons I got started in this medium. She has a great eye for color and her love of nature shines through.”

Both artists are exhibiting pastels in “Friends A’Field,” and Gilchrist is also showing oils. While Maltman and Gilchrist exhibit year-round at Woodwalk Gallery, this exhibit will be on display from July 13 – August 20. The opening reception will be held Sunday, July 13 from 4:30 – 7 pm. Musical entertainment will be provided by Julian Hagen.
