Dollar General Hearing Scheduled for Feb. 25

Heading into a public hearing on a developer’s proposal for a Dollar General store in the Town of Egg Harbor, We Are Eggs Against Dollar General has obtained more than 2,600 signatures on a petition opposing the Tennessee-based discount chain store. The proposed site is at the junction of Highway 42 and Hillside Road, next to the Egg Harbor Fun Park.

The Egg Harbor Town Board’s public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25, 6 pm, via Zoom or dial-in conference call. No in-person attendance is available because of pandemic safety guidelines.

The Michigan developer, Peter Oleszczuk of Midwest Property Development, will present his proposal for the 9,100-square-foot store with parking space for 30 vehicles. A public-comment period will follow the presentation. Those wishing to speak will have three minutes to do so, with 10 minutes allowed for special-interest groups. We Are Eggs Against Dollar General intends to present its case as a special-interest group, said Meg Stapleton, one of the organizers.

Stapleton said the size of the proposed store is roughly the size of the pre-expansion Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay. She said her group opposes the national big-box retailer because it does not fit the aesthetic of the town, does not preserve the town’s rural character according to its comprehensive plan, would increase traffic congestion, would impair night-sky enjoyment with its bright lights, and is not necessary because of existing alternative shopping opportunities nearby.
