Donna Brown Celebrates Nature at Mr. Helsinki Exhibit

Painting by Donna Brown.

Mr. Helsinki Restaurant will host an exhibit of new work by local artist Donna Brown from June 1 through July 12. This body of work focuses on flowers with a subtle pairing of birds, bees and butterflies. Brown hopes that viewers will not only enjoy the imagery but will become more aware of the symbiotic relationship people have with these fragile, threatened entities.

Door County has a wealth of beautiful flowers, both wild and cultivated. Brown hopes that viewers, as they admire the gorgeous profusion of apple and cherry blossoms, will notice the hum of bees working their magic. And maybe in appreciation of these busy workers, the viewers support legislation to stop the use of chemicals that cause hive collapse.

While enjoying the fragrance of lilacs you may also see monarchs hovering there as well. These delicate creatures are dying by the thousands due to changes that limit their food sources and their habitat. Monarch Watch is an organization that is monitoring and educating the public about their plight.

And then of course there are the songbirds. Again habitat and chemicals are affecting their wellbeing. What can we do? Stop roadside spraying and cutting, plant and encourage milkweed and other nectar-producing plants. Buy organic produce. Build a bluebird house. Be aware. Be active. Celebrate…protect.
