Door County Art: Native American Art Featured in Fish Creek

The Santa Fe Shop in Fish Creek features the artwork of Red Starr “Elk,” a full-blooded Native American. Born into the Sioux Nation in 1937, he was inspired to hand coil and craft pottery by Charles Blunt Horn, Norman Red Star and Swift Bird.

Red Starr specializes in hand etching on the traditional black on black, Santa Clara pottery. He will etch animals, feathers, bear paws, and many other different designs. He accents his pottery with turquoise stones. He also hand carves sculptures on wood or stone, crafts belt buckles from bead work and paints in oil.

Of oil painting, which he says he enjoys the most, Red Starr feels, “I can get more creative and distinctive in my designs.”

The Santa Fe Shop is located at 4147 Main Street in Fish Creek. For more information call 920.868.4300.
