Door County Art Scene: Art League Gathers for Potluck

Fused glass bowls by Doug and Barbara Henderson, DCAL members who will lead a glass quilt project at the upcoming potluck.

Monday, February 23, Door County Art League (DCAL) members will get together to socialize at a potluck dinner beginning at 6 pm at the Gibraltar Fire Department meeting room. The public is invited; please bring a dish to pass, a plate, and eating utensils.

Following the potluck, members and guests will collaborate on a glass “quilt” with artists Doug and Barbara Henderson. Each person will be able to work on a five-inch square glass tile with instruction and assistance from the Hendersons, who will assemble the tiles to complete the “quilt.” The finished product will be raffled off at the League’s 23rd Annual Juried Exhibit and Master’s Presentation in June.

Before her involvement with fused glass, Barbara Henderson spent more than 40 years working in the fiber arts, first creating batiks and later weaving off-loom creations and designing soft sculpture dolls. She gets her inspiration from the things around her, which is reflected in the textural and organic nature of her work. Doug Henderson, an educator and museum director, is not a formally trained artist. In fact, he began experimenting with photography, where his images captured the architectural details of both buildings and landscapes. As a glass artist, Doug incorporates those same structural elements and details into his work.

The February 23 bring-a-dish gathering provides a great opportunity for members and interested persons to share in a cooperative project to benefit the DCAL and to experiment with a new medium through the generosity of the Hendersons. The Gibraltar Fire Department is located at 3496 County Road F in Fish Creek. For more information on the DCAL, visit http://www.doorcountyartleague.org or call JoAnne Rosenfeld at 920.559.7530.
