More than a dozen years after its initiation as brainstorming sessions for the Peninsula School of Art, the resulting “Broad Salon” continues to serve the peninsula’s artists as an arena of friendly criticism and an exchange of ideas. On exhibit through March 1, the public is invited to “experience” the artwork of 19 members of the Broad Salon, whose mediums include pastels, watercolors, copper and hand-colored etchings, acrylic, pen and ink, oils, and fabric.
The creation of the Broad Salon truly was a happy accident. Meeting as a casual group, one of the participants presented a painting for critique. By the third meeting, the men in earlier attendance had vanished, leaving women artists, each of whom displayed a piece of artwork for artistic evaluation. And so the Broad Salon was born…serendipitously, at best.
Loosely organized, spontaneous, and ever-changing, the group of 50 women artists has grown friend by friend. Meeting once a month, the Broad Salon artists critique each other’s work; they share ideas and concepts, as well as discuss the challenges they encounter in creating art.
The public is invited to visit “Artists of the Broad Salon” during regular DCA box office hours, Monday through Friday, 10 am – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 am – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. For more information call 920.868.2728 or visit http://www.dcauditorium.org.
