Door County Art Scene: Gail Hathaway – Wildlife and Lighthouse Artist

Stop in at the Jacksonport Craft Cottage for handcrafted, holiday gifts. This month the Craft Cottage is pleased to highlight rock art by Gail Hathaway of Sister Bay.

Hathaway, who spent time living in the Chesapeake Bay area where she drew sailing vessels, fascinating buildings and lighthouses, originally worked in pencil then moved on to pen and ink, colored pencil, watercolor pencils, mixed media and now with acrylics on Door County dolomite rocks.

Her extremely detailed depictions of lighthouses are created from reference photos. Each piece comes with a handwritten certificate highlighting the history of the light and is a perfect gift item for that lighthouse collector on your list. Hathaway also does special orders.

When Hathaway moved to Door County her artwork moved beyond her maritime locales and exploded into painting wildlife on feathers and deerskin. Wildlife selections are also available at the Craft Cottage.

The Jacksonport Craft Cottage, located on Hwy. 57 in downtown Jacksonport is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays November through April from 9 am – 5 pm or call 920.823.2288 for requested hours.
