Door County Art Scene: MAM Invites Kids for Fun

Coming to the Miller Art Museum beginning Saturday, January 24 through April 14 are 80 original works of art from Denise Fleming, a Caldecott Honor Award winning illustrator of young children’s books.

Twelve of Fleming’s books will be represented in a colorful array of work. To enrich the experience of her books, the Miller Art Museum is creating a “park-like” environment where young children can come and read, or be read to, play with puppets, make art and more. This kind of special exhibition is the perfect marriage of visual and reading literacy and is an enjoyable way to encourage reading.

Titles of her books included in this exhibition are: In The Tall, Tall Grass; In The Small, Small Pond; Barnyard Banter; Where Once There Was A Wood; Time To Sleep; The Everything Book; The First Day Of Winter; Alphabet Under Construction; Count!; Lunch; Buster; Mama Cat Has Two Kittens; and Pumpkin Eye. Published by Henry Holt & company, LLC, her 1994 book In The Small, Small Grass gave her the Caldecott Honor Award.

The Miller Art Museum, located at 107 S. 4th Avenue in Sturgeon Bay, will be closed from December 29 through January 24 for annual maintenance and exhibit installation. The Opening Day Celebration of Denise Fleming’s exhibit will be Saturday, January 24 from 3 – 4:30 pm with children’s activities and treats.
