Since September of 2008, Suzanne Rose has been the Paine Art Center and Garden’s artist-in-residence. Rose, a fine art photographer living in Door County, turned her lens on Oshkosh and created two bodies of work that are on exhibit now through October of 2009.
Rose’s residency complements the Paine’s current exhibition “Seeing Ourselves: Masterpieces of American Photography from George Eastman House Collections,” by shedding light on the creative process of a living fine art photographer. “Seeing Ourselves” is on view through October 11, 2009 and is the largest and most comprehensive presentation of masterpieces of American photography ever shown in Wisconsin.
For nearly a year, Suzanne has spent numerous days in Oshkosh photographing features and scenes throughout the community for the portion of her exhibit “Mediations on Oshkosh.” These photographs are shown online in a Web journal by the artist (http://www.thepaine.org). For the exhibition at the Paine, presented in the Mears Gallery, Suzanne chose a dozen highlights to display for visitors.
As part of her residency, Suzanne photographed several people who work at Mercy Medical Center, including doctors, nurses, and volunteers. These “portraits” feature only the hands of the people, and many of the images include a meaningful item or setting related to each professional’s work. These images are presented at Mercy Medical Center, 500 S. Oakwood Road, Oshkosh, along with photos of hands of other “caregivers” in the community, such as an artist, historic preservationist, art curator, horticulturist, college instructor, and religious leader. The exhibition “Portrait of a Community” weaves together the missions of Mercy Medical Center and the Paine Art Center and Gardens as well as draws attention to other organizations and people in the community who care for our well-being.
Paine Art Center and Gardens is located at 1410 Algoma Blvd. in Oshkosh. For more information call 920.235.6903, email [email protected] or http://www.thepaine.org.
