For the second time in four years, the name Daoust rests atop the list of the best boys basketball players in the Packerland Conference.
The Southern Door Eagles’ Alex Daoust was named this year’s top player after leading the team to a 17-5 record and the conference title with a 15-1 mark. Daoust’s brother Kyle was named Player of the Year in 2018.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” Alex Daoust said. “There have been many great athletes to get this award, and to be a part of that means a lot. It’s very cool that my brother and I won this award. We both worked very hard.”
Daoust led the Packerland Conference in scoring with 21 points per game and also led the league in assists with 6.8 per outing. Combined, his passing and scoring stats accounted for 35 of the 68 points Southern Door scored per game.
“It’s because of that efficiency that I believe other coaches took notice,” Southern Door Coach Josh Vandenbush said. “Alex was often the guy that you would have to game-plan for the most and do everything you could to slow him down. Because he would draw so much attention from other teams, it would open up opportunities for his teammates.”
Joining Daoust on the first team was Gibraltar’s Sam Lindenberg. The junior shooting guard led the Vikings in scoring with 18 points per game and was second in rebounding with 6.3 per outing.
“I think the other coaches recognized Sam as an impact player,” Gibraltar Coach Justin Burress said of Lindenberg, who was second in the Packerland Conference in scoring. “Offensively, he played any position and was a solid defender as well.”
Sturgeon Bay’s Anthony Jennerjohn and Jack Schmelzer joined Gibraltar’s Luke Steebs on the second team. Schmelzer and Jennerjohn scored 11.7 and 11.3 points per game, respectively, for the Clippers. Steebs was the Vikings’ second-leading scorer with 17.4 points per game and is second all time in career scoring, with 889 points.
Nicole Norton made it a Southern Door sweep of the Packerland Conference’s top spots by earning the girls’ Player of the Year honor.
Norton led the conference with 23.3 points per game and added 5.6 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.0 assists for the 15-6 Eagles. She averaged 16.5 points and 4.3 rebounds as an All-Conference selection last season.
“Nicole has unbelievable talent getting to the basket,” Southern Door Coach Jason Shimon said. “When teams started to take some of that away, Nicole showed teams she could make the three-point shot, which would open up her drive more. Some teams were successful on taking her drive and shooting away at times, and this is where her growth this year came into play. We could put her in the post against smaller guards, and she could provide low post scoring.”
Sevastopol’s Zoe Kuehn was named to the girls’ first team. Kuehn averaged 17.5 points and 10.0 rebounds for the Pioneers and was third in the conference in scoring and second in rebounding. She also finished her career with 1,202 points.
“Zoe’s stop-on-a-dime patented jumper and her ability to get to the rim will be sorely missed,” Sevastopol Coach Ben Rikkola said.
Karlee Kita of Gibraltar and Southern Door’s Hailey Shimon were named to the second team. Kita scored 12 points and grabbed 8.9 rebounds per game for the Vikings. Shimon turned in 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Eagles.
Southern Door also dominated the All-Conference wrestling team by placing seven wrestlers on the first team. Kewaunee’s Jack Severin, Division 3 state champion at 126 pounds, was named Wrestler of the Year.
Grant Englebert – Division 3 160-pound runner-up – led the group of Eagles who won conference honors. Spencer Slezewski (106-pound weight class), Griffin Slezewski (138), Kyle Conard (152), Brad Skippon (182), Riley Phillips (220) and Brodie Overbeck (285) all joined Englebert.
“We’ve been fortunate to have some good numbers and hard-working wrestlers,” Southern Door Coach Jerry Englebert said. “The seniors stuck with [the program], and the freshmen have bought into it.”
Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol’s Ben DeNamur was named All-Conference at 132 pounds.
