The Door County Baseball Hall of Fame banquet was held Sept. 15 at the Lodge at Leathem Smith in Sturgeon Bay. The following players were inducted: Joe Hoffman, Institute; Adam Bretl, Kolberg; Jack Schartner, Egg Harbor; Steve Jilot, West Jacksonport; Jason Annis, Institute; Bill Kroll, Egg Harbor and Institute; Dave Neinas, Kolberg; Craig Bastian, Baileys Harbor; Bob Haberli, Sister Bay; and Bob Young, Washington Island. David “Chico” Moeller received an achievement award. He was a notable player, but didn’t spend 10 years in the league to be eligible for Hall of Fame consideration.

Jocko Rader, Door County Baseball League historian and public relations officer, offered the following comments about each inductee.

Joe Hoffman: He had a .300 average, was a homerun hitter and played good defense.

Adam Bretl: Outstanding pitcher who won three Pitcher of the Year awards and led Kolberg to 30 straight wins.

Jack Schartner: First baseman and pitcher who hit .500. He led the league in inherited runs, home runs and runs batted in.

Steve Jilot: Good center fielder who won the batting championship three times.

Jason Annis: Third baseman who played in the league for 20 years, and who always had a .300 or greater average.

Bill Kroll: A catcher who was the only hitter that Rader remembers hitting in all 14 games.

Dave Neinas: An outstanding pitcher and manager for Kolberg who won Pitcher of the Year twice and Manager of the Year five times.

Craig Bastian: Outstanding player in legion and high school play, as well as for Baileys Harbor. He threw a no-hitter against Washington Island.

Bob Haberli: Outstanding center fielder and hitter for Sister Bay who won many championships.

Bob Young: A first baseman who could hit and field very well. He and his brother Dennis led the Island to many wins.

David Moeller: He was an outstanding player in high school, legion and the Door County Baseball League. He gave Jacksonport a chance to win every game, and retired at the young age of 26.
