Door County Bike Planning

The Town of Gibraltar gathered input from citizens for a Comprehensive Bike Plan Aug. 11. Kevin Luecke, Lead Planner with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, said the first step is to gather input and expertise from community members on gaps in infrastructure and problem areas for riders.

“We want to make sure we get it right,” he said.

Gibraltar is the first Door County municipality to start a bike plan, though Egg Harbor voted to move forward on a plan Monday, August 10.

Among the aspects and areas discussed were:

• Adding signage and road markings (such as sharrows), especially through downtown, to increase awareness and visibility of bicyclists. There are currently no street markings, lanes or signs in Northern Door, except for small route markers on back roads.

• Connecting the downtown to the Gibraltar school campus and YMCA with sidewalks and bike lanes. Between Gibraltar school and the YMCA, there are nearly 1,000 people at that corner most days of the year, but there are no bike lanes or sidewalks connecting them to the rest of the village.

• Addressing or routing bikes around the busy intersection by On Deck and the C & C Supper Club. A suggestion to use Bluff lane and create a path connecting the deadend road to town property behind the town center was brought up.

• Finding a better way for bicyclists to enter and exit Peninsula State Park was discussed.

• Creating a bike lane or path between Fish Creek and Ephraim, the two most popular destinations in the county. Bikers currently must ride on a narrow shoulder on Highway 42 alongside 55 mile an hour traffic to get between Ephraim and Fish Creek. It was suggested that an offroad path be built on the Peninsula State Park side of the highway to connect the two communities. There is also no path between the school and YMCA for kids to get to the nearby Fish Creek BP, a popular after school destination for kids to get snacks.

The Gibraltar Bike Plan Steering Committee will meet again Sept. 9 at 7 pm. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend and give input. Luecke has created an online survey to help inform planning at http://tinyurl.com/n6wm51.
