Door County Brewing Co. Hosting Beard, Mustache Competition

The Door Peninsula is heating up and residents are starting to ditch the layers and accessories necessary to survive the brutality of the year’s coldest months. Along with the liberation of heavier fabrics, the physiological fabric (that is men’s facial hair) is something that is often removed as temperatures elevate.

However, the Door County Brewing Co. is providing a reason to keep the razor down for at least a few more weeks with its Beard and Mustache Competition on May 30.

There will be a handful of outlets to display your favorite follicle fashion. The six categories will be comprised of a mustache, partial beard, freestyle, awesome man beard, full beard (more than six inches), and children’s division.

“It’s going to be sweet. I know of a handful of people who have been waiting for a good excuse to show off all of their facial hair and this is the perfect opportunity,” says Danny McMahon, brewmaster at the brewery and one of the five judges of the whiskered competition. “Plus it’ll just be good fun and plenty of good beer to drink.”

The prevalence of facial hair is a trend that has “grown” throughout the country in recent years and has spawned bearded social clubs in a variety of precincts.

“Beards have always been a fascination,” says John McMahon, co-founder of Door County Brewing Co.

“Keep DC beer’d” is an original motto John says perfectly encapsulates the symbiotic passions of quality beer and the quality of testosterone-fueled follicles that comprise many a Door County man’s face.

McMahon believes that by looking at a man’s choice of facial hair, you “can see how it defines his character,” and that their facial hair can be emblematic of an individual’s personality.

This is a sentiment that is echoed by Ray Pelrine, one of the event’s judges and a man that has a fully developed beard that would undoubtedly rival any of the rugged competitors whom he will be judging at the event.

“I think a great beard is about confidence projected. It may be full, coiffed, or over the top, but it has to have some way of conveying that its master knows who he is and where he’s headed,” he says.

The competition will be comprised of five judges with the scoring ranging from a five, the lowest score, to a 10.5, the highest mark an entrant can receive. The facial affair will run from noon until 6 pm with each hour consisting of one of the six different categories.

All proceeds of the event will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Door County. Each contestant will receive a trophy and the overall winner gets four cases of beer, growler carrier and filled growler, a t-shirt and a trophy.

Undoubtedly a great stash for the winner who can really rock their “stache.”
