Door County Classic & Wooden Boat Show

Summer is here and once again the Door County Classic & Wooden Boat Show will be held on the grounds of the Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society in Sturgeon Bay. Now in its 14th year, this two-day celebration of handmade and lovingly restored boats will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 7th and 8th. In addition to the fifty or more boats that will be on display both days, the event will host a boat-building contest set to begin Saturday morning. Teams have four hours in which to fashion a boat from a very limited supply of lumber, held together with Sikaflex, a marine adhesive. Sunday afternoon the teams will take turns in the water for sea trials. People’s Choice Awards are bestowed based on creativity and overall joie de vivre.

As part of the two-day event, the Boathouse Sale will feature nautical treasures that have been gathered from all over the county. They will be offered for sale with all proceeds benefiting the restoration of the 1938 sloop, Escape, originally constructed in Sturgeon Bay by Peterson Builders.

Other activities will include canoe races, as well as demonstrations and short lectures on diving, kayaking, and sailing. Model boat building will entertain children, as will a huge inflatable bouncer complete with climbing walls and a slide. A raffle for prizes, which includes a handmade feather strip canoe, rounds out the weekend’s events.
