Door County Community News: Eye Clinic Will Take Old Eyeglasses on Mission to India

Two doctors from BayCare’s Green Bay Eye Clinic will depart on a humanitarian mission to the Himalayan mountain city of Siliguri, India, in December where they will perform vision-restoring eye surgeries for people who otherwise would not have access to such treatment.

As part of their mission, the doctors are asking area residents to donate their un-needed eyeglasses, which will be given away to improve the vision of patients they treat in India. Their goal: to collect more than 500 pairs of glasses by the end of November.

Something as simple as an old pair of glasses can improve someone’s life immensely, explains Dianna Bordewick, M.D. She and Kevin Wienkers, M.D., will depart for India December 1 for the five-day mission. During that time, they expect to complete more than 100 cataract surgeries, examine patients and match them with the donated eyeglasses.

Anyone wishing to donate can drop off glasses at Bay Care’s Green Bay Eye Clinic or send them to the clinic, which is located at 2253 West Mason Street (phone 920.327.7000) now until November 30.
