Door County Community News: FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Cards Save Money

Since August, when United Way of Door County began distributing the cards, nearly $14,000 has been saved by Door County residents at all of the county pharmacies. A total of 186 claims were presented to area pharmacies for more than $21,000 in submitted fees. Of those $21,000 in prescription medicine, Door County residents only paid $7,627.05 towards the cost of their health care. That is an average savings of 64 percent, which is above the state average of 42 percent and greater than the national average savings of 35 percent.

“Healthcare costs are one of the top concerns for people in our community,” said Christine Salmon, Community Relations Director of United Way of Door County. “Forty percent of adults don’t buy the medicine they need, have difficulty affording it, or reduce the required dosage because of the high cost. The FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards will help individuals and families who otherwise could not afford to buy the medicine they need.”

Even if you have health insurance, you may be eligible for greater discounts with the FamilyWize prescription drug discount card being distributed by United Way of Door County. The card is free and there are no enrollment fees, no income or age restrictions and it can be used as often as needed until the year 2012, when replacement cards will be made available. Cards are available at all county pharmacies, the Wellness Center of Door County, the Community Clinic of Door County, Door County Department of Social Services, WDOR, and the Door County Department of Public Health.

Participating Door County pharmacies are Pamida, Aurora, Wal-Mart, Bay Pharmacy, and Walgreens. These cards are also honored nationwide, especially at national chains such as Pamida, Wal-Mart and Walgreens. If you carry the FamilyWize card while traveling and need a prescription filled, details of participating pharmacies can be found at http://www.familywize.org.
