Door County Community News For May 1 – 14

• The Gibraltar baseball team will host its annual Whitefish Fry at Alexander’s Restaurant in Fish Creek on Tuesday, May 4. Fish will be served from 4:30 – 7:30 pm. All plates included fish fry, boiled potatoes and onions, coleslaw, rye bread, dessert, and a drink. Hot dogs will be available for kids.

Meal costs $12 for adults, $6 for children age 6 – 11, and children age five and under eat free.

The funds raised will be used by the Gibraltar Baseball Team for purchasing additional equipment needed due to an increase in the number of ballplayers. The Gibraltar baseball team would like to thank Bruce Alexander for opening up his restaurant for their cause, as well as Jeff Weborg and the Northern Door Commercial Fishermen for donating all of the fish. • The Northern Door Children’s Center rolls out the red carpet to celebrate their “stars” on Sunday, May 16 at Bjorklunden in Baileys Harbor. The 10th Annual Spring Gala offers delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts from the community’s finest chefs, along with wine sampling and the melodies of springtime in beautiful Door County.

The gala brings a taste of Door County’s best restaurants under one roof as well as a wine tasting and opportunity to purchase a variety of new and exciting wines at discounted prices. The “stars” also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction filled with treasures from the many generous businesses that share the passion for quality early childhood education and care in northern Door County.

Our community is now familiar with the annual car raffle to benefit the center. Benefactor Judith Blazer has chosen a 2010 Mini Cooper Convertible as this summer’s stunning raffle prize. Only 4,000 twenty-dollar tickets will be sold. See this year’s Mini Cooper as it makes its debut on the red carpet at the Gala.

• Construction crews of women volunteers nationwide will don tool belts and safety glasses to pound nails and raise walls in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 1 – 9.

Locally, the Door County Habitat for Humanity Women Build volunteers will take part in the celebration by hosting a Women Build Day May 1 from 8 am – 3 pm at 606 North 4th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. The day gives the work crew a chance to use their skills by deconstructing existing walls in preparation for installing new insulation, drywall and windows. This is the first Habitat rehab project taking place in Door County.

Women Build volunteers have been busy training locally over the past few months, learning about safety on the work site, basic construction skills, framing, roofing, installing vinyl siding, drywall and insulation.

• Boy Scout Troop 1022 will host a Pancake Breakfast Saturday, May 1, at the First Baptist Church in Sturgeon Bay from 7 – 11 am.

The scouts will be serving pancakes, sausage links, applesauce and beverages. Tickets will be available at the door: $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5 – 10, children age 4 and under eat free. Proceeds will help scouts pay for summer camp, attendance at the 100th Anniversary Scout Jamboree in Washington DC, and other scouting activities throughout the year.

The First Baptist Church is located at the corner of Georgia St. and N. 5th Ave. Parking is available in the church parking lot and on the street.

• National youth communicator Bob Lenz will speak at the Door Community Auditorium May 5 at 7 pm.

Lenz reached over 300,000 teens and their parents last year about the topics of self-image, alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, broken family relationships, and misconceptions about sex and dating. He offers a sincere presentation as he intertwines his faith into a message that captivates audiences with humor, restoring hope at the same time. Bob emphasizes the need to own one’s choices, right or wrong, and motivates youth to see the worth and value of their lives and the lives of their friends.

Lenz connects with his audiences by sharing valuable principals mixed with true-life stories and personal experiences that help youth deal with real life issues. Over the past 27 years Lenz has spoken to over 1,000,000 students in more than 1,000 schools across America. He’ll be joined by AJ the Animated Illusionist.

• Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf in Sister Bay will host the Fourth Annual “Putting for Patriots” fundraiser from May 15 – 31. This national event will occur simultaneously at 36 Pirate’s Cove, Pirate’s Island and Jungle Golf miniature golf courses throughout the United States.

This May event will culminate on Memorial Day weekend and support three charities, which serve wounded vets, their families, and survivors of the fallen. These organizations include: Hope For The Warriors, Homes for Our Troops and TAPS – Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. Pirate’s Cove, Jungle Golf and Pirate’s Island will donate a percentage of their total sales on Sunday, May 30. In addition, from May 14 – 31, each golf course will accept donations to be turned over to the three charities. Since its inception, this event has raised over $57,000.

• Four area leaders were recognized at the April 14 meeting of the Door Community Non Profit Group. Jan Scoville, representing Neighbor to Neighbor, served as chair for one year; Barb Maskell, representing HELP of Door County, served as treasurer for four years; Coggin Heeringa, representing Crossroads at Big Creek, served as secretary for one year; and Julie LaLuzerne, representing Raibrook Foundation, served as program committee chair for two years.

The Door Community Non Profit Group was formed in 2003 to initiate networking opportunities, share resources and calendars and improve professional skills. The members of the group are all non-profit organizations who promote and support each other’s philanthropic efforts in Door County.

• United Way of Door County is seeking a youth board member to replace Sevastopol Senior Sara Hasenjager, who is leaving the board after two years of service, and another position vacated by 2009 Sturgeon Bay graduate Jordan Burke.

Hasenjager values the experience gained while serving on the United Way board.

“I learned so much about the Door community during my time on the board,” Hasenjager said. “There are so many giving people, who do so much to keep programs running within the county. My experience will help me as I go on to college in understanding people better.”

“Youth board members provide a different viewpoint on matters that affect our community,” said Nancy Hanson, United Way Board President.

Board candidates should be high school students completing their sophomore or junior year in any Door County school districts.

Youth serve one-year terms, with the option to serve a second term. All members of the board of directors are held to the same criteria regarding meeting attendance, committee participation, and assistance with fund development activities.

• The Village of Sister Bay will sponsor its 6th annual community-wide rummage sale May 22 from 8 am – 4 pm. All interested sellers can now register for the sale at the Sister Bay Administration Office or at http://www.sisterbay.com. Just click on the link “Newsletter – Winter 2010,” to find the form.

The cost to hold a sale that day is $10, which pays for all advertising, thousands of distributed maps, an online listing, and signs for your sale. The deadline to register is Friday, May 7. Restaurants will join the festivities with specials that day. • Applications are currently being accepted for the Lucy J. Erdmann scholarship. This scholarship is open to any graduate of a Door County high school who is enrolled in a certified nursing program and who has successfully completed two semesters of work toward a nursing certificate.

The amount of the award is anticipated to be not less than $1,000 per year for up to three years.

Scholarship application forms are available through the School Counseling Office of each of the Door County high schools.

Completed applications should be submitted to Robert Nickel, Sturgeon Bay High School principal, by June 1.

• The Door County Home Builders Association invites interested builders and residential designers to a free Simpson Strong-Tie Braced Wall Workshop from 8 am – noon May 13, at the Jaycee Hall, 340 Jaycee Court, Sturgeon Bay.

The workshop is intended for residential building designers, builders, building officials and plan reviewers interested in learning about wall bracing requirements of the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC). The program will cover prescriptive wall bracing provisions of the UDC as well as alternative bracing methods that address contemporary designs.

Topics include garage fronts, stacked narrow walls and two-story great room walls. Professional development hours and continued educational units will be awarded/met upon completion.

• The Home & Garden Expo sponsored by the Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA) generated $1,356 for Feed & Clothe My People.

Stella Huff, director of Feed & Clothe My People, said the money is being used to purchase food from area stores for persons in need.

Cynthia Crock of Baileys Harbor won an outdoor frog water fountain donated by WaterScape Designs of Forestville at the expo, and Roger Kerscher of Sturgeon Bay, won a concrete coffee table, crafted and donated by Dylan Lauger of Lauger Concrete in Sturgeon Bay. • The Sister Bay Moravian Men’s Fellowship will hold a pig roast Saturday, May 1. The roast will be fire-roasted by well-known northern Door County master pig roaster Kirby Olson. It’s a great opportunity to eat, meet your neighbors and friends, and greet our new pastor, Rev. Kerry Krauss and his family. The feast will take place at the Sister Bay Moravian Church, at the corner of Hill and Old Stage Roads. The cost will be $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 5 – 10 years old. All proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief Fund.

• The School District of Sevastopol will conduct its annual three- and four-year-old developmental screening on Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4 in the Multi-Purpose Room at Sevastopol School.

All children who will be four years old prior to September 1, 2010 are eligible to participate in this screening. This year children who will be three on or before May 3 are also being screened. Children turning three between May 5 and September 1, 2010 will be contacted in late summer/early fall for screening.

The screening provides parents information about their child’s individual development. This screening involves a health and developmental interview with parent, a hearing and vision check, and an opportunity for your child to present thinking, language, and motor skills. After children complete the screening process, parents will have the opportunity to review the results with an early childhood staff member. The entire process takes less than two hours. Registration packets for the four-year-old kindergarten program will also be available at screening. Please bring your child’s birth certificate when you register your child. • Dining Around the Door, an event offering a taste of many of Door County’s best restaurants and businesses, will be held Sunday, May 2 at the Gordon Lodge in Baileys Harbor. The event benefits the Door County YMCA.

The event features a silent auction, live music, dinner and dancing starting at 5 pm. Tickets are $40 per person or $300 for a table of 8 and are available at both Door County YMCA Program Centers. Call 920.743.4949 or 920.868.8660 for more details.
