Door County Community News: Habitat Seeks Women Builders

The women of Door County will soon have the unique opportunity to be part of the first local Habitat home built by women.

Door County Habitat for Humanity, which builds to address the local affordable housing shortage, will complete its 27th home in 2008. Aware of the ongoing need for affordable housing, Habitat is hoping to ramp up construction and expand its volunteer base to include more women volunteers.

Women Build is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity International, funded in part by Lowe’s. The program’s objective is to “encourage women to make a difference by building homes and communities.” Women Build is not about excluding men. It is about including women and opening new doors for volunteer opportunities. All skill levels from novice to master carpenter are welcome.

Door County Habitat for Humanity hopes to undertake a Women Build Habitat home in 2009. As a first step in determining how to proceed with this project, Habitat for Humanity will be holding an informational/organizational meeting Thursday, Oct. 16 at 6 pm at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. Questions may be directed to Rick Nelson, Executive Director at 920.743.2869.
