Door County Community News: Ribbon Cutting at The Ridges

The Ridges Sanctuary is not only responsible for maintaining it’s 1,600 acres of natural areas, but it is also responsible for maintaining the Baileys Harbor Range Lights and the surrounding buildings. The Range Lights have the honor of being on the National Registry of Historic Places because of their unique structure and cultural history.

The Ridges Wednesday Work Crew, for several years, had been debating ideas for rebuilding, refurbishing or rehabilitating the rapidly deteriorating building. Bob Brogan, a volunteer with both The Ridges Sanctuary and The Clearing, suggested asking John Turner’s Construction class to help with the building.

Recently, with help from students at a Clearing Class and Ridges volunteers, the wood shed behind the Upper Range Light was rebuilt and painted. Over 35 people gathered at the Upper Range Light to thank the Ridges’ volunteers and The Clearing class students and instructors, John Turner and Dick Malm.

The Ridges Sanctuary trails are open year around from dawn to dusk. Come and hike the trails and boardwalk and see this little icon of volunteerism behind the Upper Rangelight.
