• The public is invited to the Door County League of Women Voters’ Annual Meeting, which will be held on Thursday, May 14 at the Mill Supper Club in Sturgeon Bay. The evening will commence at 4:30 pm with a happy hour, then a business meeting at 5:15 pm, dinner at 6 pm and a 7 pm presentation by Mike McCabe, Executive Director for the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, on campaign finance reform.

While voters may not agree on which candidate in an election should get their vote, most agree that the system of campaign financing in the United States is broken, and increasingly, citizens wonder whether the financing of election campaigns fairly can ever be accomplished.

Mike McCabe will explain the developments leading to the current situation in Wisconsin as well as the status of current reform proposals. The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is a nonpartisan political watchdog group founded in 1995 that tracks the money in state politics and advocates for campaign finance reform, election integrity, media democracy, ethic reform, open government, judicial independence and other democracy reforms.

Anyone wishing to attend must RSVP by Saturday, May 9 to reserve a place and choose their dinner entrée by calling Susan Kohout at (920.743.1527) or emailing ([email protected]).

• Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer Caregivers of Door County’s spring community support event is underway. The organization’s annual Stay-At-Home Ball will occur at no special time or place. Instead of attending an event, the community is asked to make a donation to Neighbor-to-Neighbor that is equivalent to what would be spent on an evening out. The agency’s goal for this event is $20,000.

“One thousand invitations were sent to previous donors. With an average pledge of $20, we can easily meet this goal,” stated Jan Scoville, Executive Director. “A donation to Neighbor-to-Neighbor is truly a way to ‘pay it forward.’”

Neighbor-to-Neighbor oversees four programs:  Medical Equipment Loans, Peer Companions, Respite Care Providers and The Lemonade Club, a cancer support group. All services are provided at no charge with the generous support of volunteers and donations from individuals and agencies.

If interested in contributing to the Stay-At-Home Ball please contact Jan Scoville at P.O. Box 626, Sturgeon Bay, WI or 920.743.7800.
