Door County Election Results: 2 City Incumbents Go Down

Voters in the City of Sturgeon Bay sent a strong message to City Hall in Tuesday’s election, ousting two incumbents and giving two others a scare with write-in candidates. 

Each of the challenging candidates have voiced concerns about the council’s handling of the West Side Redevelopment Waterfront Hotel project.

Kelly Catarozoli defeated Dan Wiegand in District 1, 136 – 88. In District 7 Will Gregory ran as a write-in and defeated incumbent Bob Schlicht Jr, 145 – 120.

Ed Ireland held off a write-in campaign from Martha Beller, and Jerry Stults held on against a week-old write-in campaign from Jared Nellis. 

The Southern Door School Board saw dramatic turnover as well. Polly Alberts is the only incumenbent who will retain her position. Ken Warren and Chuck Bretl fell to newcomers Tammy Sternard and Kim Nowikowski. 

At Gibraltar School, the controversial mid-year departure of principal Kirk Knutson sparked an election fight for three longtime incumbents. Mark Weborg and Lynnea Hickey held on, but Martha Luber Pelrine was ousted as Lynn Herman garnered more votes than any other canditate in the race. 

Both school referendums up for a vote passed Tuesday as well. Sevastopol and Washington Island each passed referendums comfortably.
