Door County Event – Presentation Complements “Freshwater Fury” Exhibit

Frederick Stonehouse, one of the foremost authorities on Great Lakes maritime history, will present Friday, October 17 in Baileys Harbor.

Sponsored by the Door County Maritime Museum in conjunction with the museum’s current “Freshwater Fury” exhibit in Sturgeon Bay, Stonehouse’s presentation will explore the United States Life-Saving Service at the time of the massive storm of 1913, on which the exhibit is based.

“I happened to see the program and it was excellent, very well done,” said DCMM curator John Moga, who helped to facilitate Stonehouse’s visit.

Stonehouse has authored more than 30 books on Maritime history including The Wreck of the ‘Edmund Fitzgerald’ and Great Lakes Lighthouse Tales, both of which were regional best sellers. Stonehouse has served as a consultant for both the U.S. National Park Service and Parks Canada and has been an “on-air” consultant for the National Geographic Channel, History Channel and Fox Family. He was the 2006 winner of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History Award for Historic Interpretation and more recently was named the Marine Historical Society of Detroit’s ‘2007 Historian of the Year.’ Stonehouse is president of the Board of the Marquette Maritime Museum and also president of the National Board of Directors of the U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association.

Stonehouse will speak at 3 pm at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall. The cost of the program is $5 for museum members and $12 for nonmembers, including a free admission coupon to the maritime museum. Tickets are available in advance at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, 120 N Madison Ave, or at the door. For more information, call 920.743.5958.
