Door County Galleries and Art – Fenendael to Receive DCAL 2008 Master’s Award

“Chore Time” by Ed Fenendael.

Annually, the Door County Art League (DCAL) has the distinct pleasure of naming the Door County Master Artist. This year at the opening of the league’s 22nd Annual Fall Juried Exhibit, the very well-known and well-loved painter, Ed Fenendael of Morning Mist Studio at Windmill Farm in Baileys Harbor, will be presented the 2008 award.

The Masters Reception and opening of the fall exhibit will be held on Sunday, September 14, 1 – 3 pm, at Trattoria Dal Santo restaurant, 147 North Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. The public is invited. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a cash bar will be available. Bob Kaczmarowski will be providing musical entertainment.

Three Awards of Excellence and six Honorable Mentions will be awarded to participants of the 22nd Annual Fall Juried Exhibit. Emmett Johns of Fish Creek is the show judge, and a People’s Choice Award will also be given.

“Summer Splendor” by Ed Fenendael.

The selection of a Door County Master Artist is a wonderful but daunting task. To select those persons who are to be so designated and inducted into a group, the likes of whom include Gerhard Miller, Phil Austin, Jack Anderson, Abe Cohn, Isabel Beaudoin, and Franne Dickinson, is a tremendous job. The committee that screens these talented people has parameters that were set by the DCAL Board of Directors many years ago.

The Master Artist must have publicly recognized talents, a body of work representing a high level of achievement in his or her field, and must have contributed significantly to the arts in Door County through community involvement, teaching, and/or promoting the arts.

Chairperson JoAnne Rosenfeld says, “Ed’s choice as the 2008 Door County Master embodies what defines the best of Door County art. This year the committee consisted of Franne Dickinson, Bonnie Hartmann, Gale Ritchey, Hermke Timm, and myself, who are thrilled and honored to make this selection.”

“Innuendo” by Ed Fenendael.

Fenendael, who has been painting for more than 30 years, loves the spontaneity of watercolor, the excitement, and the limitless possibilities that the medium offers. A native of Wisconsin, Fenendael grew up rurally and was and continues to be inspired by the great pastoral scenes of the world.

Fenendael spent several years in the late 1970’s in Kansas City. He now spends his time in Door County, painting and teaching at his studio. In addition, he teaches periodic workshops at Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek. Furthermore, Fenendael is on the visiting faculty of the Kansas City Art Institute, where he conducts classes each winter. He also gives private hourly classes and hosts workshops in Florida, California, Mexico, and Western Europe.

When notified by Rosenfeld that he is the recipient of the DCAL 2008 Master’s Award, Fenendael said, “My sincere thanks to the Door County Art League for this wonderful, unexpected honor. I am overwhelmed to be chosen, considering all of the other incredible creative people in our area. Art for me is a special gift, and I feel blessed to be able to share it.”
