Door County Golfer Profile: Todd Huehns

Age: 50

Occupation: I own and operated Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and am a licensed funeral director in Wisconsin.

Home Course: IdleWild Golf Course

Handicap: 8

Best 18-Hole Score: 76 at IdleWild

Years Playing: I have been playing since my grandfather taught me to golf at the age of 10. We would buy old clubs at garage sales and sand them down, yes, sand them down paint and refinish them to look like new.

Hole-in-Ones: I have a few near hole-in-ones, but none actually found the cup.

Favorite Golf Memory: My favorite golf memories are of family. My grandfather teaching me to golf; his words of wisdom: “don’t take a new ball over the water, use one that’s nicked up.” And enjoying the end of a day with three little boys, my sons, teaching them how to golf, and watching them enjoy driving the golf cart as I walked.

Nicest Golf Course Ever Played: The best courses I have played have been in Florida, Copperhead, TPC at Tampa Bay, and in Palm Springs California, PGA West, all tour stops.

Favorite Golfer: Phil Mickelson because I have a tendency to go for it when I should lay up, the difference between us is that Phil can deliver 80 percent of the time and I can deliver that shot one in ten times.

Fantasy Foursome: Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson

What’s in the Bag? Driver, 3 wood, and hybrid are all TaylorMade R9, 13-year-old newly regripped TaylorMade irons, Titleist Vokey 60, 56, 52 wedges, and Odyssey Two Ball putter with wide grip. For golf balls I like to play Titleist ProV1x

Strengths: Length off the tee

Weaknesses: Short game around the green and putting within 10 feet.

Golf Tip to Share: The best tip I can tell any golfer, get a swing trainer, like a heavy club and work out with it. It took my handicap down six strokes.

When not Playing Golf, Todd can be found: If I am not on the course, I enjoy my yard and boating with family.
