Door County Golfer Profile: Sean Zak

Age:  26

Occupation:  Writer for Golf Magazine

Home course:  Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn, NY

Handicap:  12

Best 18-hole score:  81

Years playing:  14

Hole-in-one:  None, sadly.

Nicest golf course ever played (Course, City, State):  Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst, NC.

Favorite golf memory:  Watching Jordan Spieth play Augusta National. I’ve felt goosebumps on a course just twice, and it was each of the last two years watching Spieth make incredible shots on the back nine at Augusta. It certainly had something to do with the setting, but a lot of it was Spieth just making magic.

Bucket list golf course:  St. Andrews Old Course

Favorite golfer:  Jordan Spieth

Fantasy foursome:  My grandpa (Tom Zak, who taught me the game), Rory McIlroy, and my college roommate who is always just a little better than me.

What’s in the bag? No driver at the moment. Getting fit for a better shaft in that club, thankfully. Mizuno irons, Wilson wedges and a Cleveland blade putter.

Strengths:  I’m definitely a good iron player. It’s just all the other shots that make life difficult out there for me.

Weaknesses:  I might have the chip yips. I’m pretty bad from just off the green, and it kills my scores.

Golf tip to share:  Get fitted for clubs. There’s so much science in golf club design, but even more to be applied to it via each person’s specific swing. Guaranteed to improve your game.

When not playing golf, you can be found:  Covering it? Actually, I’m probably playing pickup hoops somewhere.
