Door County High School Golf Wrap-Up

Ben Ehlers, a senior at Sevastopol, placed first at this year’s Packerland Conference Tournament.

The Door County high school golf teams spent the majority of their season bundled up in layers of golf gear as this year’s spring brought unseasonably cool and unfriendly conditions. The weather was no different at the Packerland Conference Championship held at Northbrook Country Club on Tuesday, May 3.

Battle for the top came down to the backside of the 18-hole tournament. By creating confidence on the front side, and realizing the difficult nature of the backside, Sturgeon Bay was able maintain enough energy to bring home the coveted Conference trophy. They edged out second-place Sevastopol by six strokes.

“I told my golfers, the trophy will not have weather conditions nor their scores engraved on it, only that they won the championship in 2011,” stated Sturgeon Bay head coach, Tony Smith. “They responded with a gutsy backside performance.”

Senior, Tate Stuth, led the Clippers with a score of 85 and came into the clubhouse as fifth overall. Sevastopol senior Ben Ehlers was the tournament’s medalist with a score of 78.
