If ever there were a time for Door County history buffs to brave the cold in favor of interesting historical presentations, this weekend is definitely it. Learn about the historic girls’ camp that once stood in Peninsula State Park and hear about one of the county’s most interesting men, Hjalmar Holand, from another of the peninsula’s most interesting men, Steve Grutzmacher. As always, winter activities and live music – along with a Mad Hatter’s Ball – round out the weekend ahead.
Friday, January 22
Finding Vivian Maier
Do you love photography? Get acquainted with photographer Vivian Maier through a Door Community Auditorium screening of Finding Vivian Maier, a film about the 20th century nanny who secretly took more than 100,000 photos that went unseen during her lifetime and who is now considered one of the greatest street photographers of the last century. 7 pm.
Classic Hits with Rosetti & Wigley
Get down to the sounds of one of the state’s hottest musical duos, Rosetti & Wigley, covering the classics of MoTown, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond and more. 8:30 pm.
Saturday, January 23
One of Door County’s Most Interesting Men
Celebrate the 90th year of the Door County Historical Society by learning about its founder, Hjalmar Holand, considered one of the county’s most interesting men. Sister Bay resident and former bookstore owner Steve Grutzmacher will present the program, which focuses on Holand’s two histories of the peninsula and his advocacy for the authenticity of the Kensington Stone. 12 pm.
Camp Meenahga Centennial Talk
This year marks one century since the founding of a girls’ camp in Peninsula State Park, which operated from 1916 until 1948. Join a park naturalist for an informal talk about camp life and view archival photos and camp yearbooks. 1 pm.
Mad Hatter’s Ball
Celebrate the small world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland during Peninsula School of Art’s Mad Hatter’s Ball on Saturday evening. View small-scale works in “Artists in Wonderland” and gather a team of six to create large-scale pieces during the ball. Enjoy lively entertainment and adult concoctions as well. 6 – 9 pm.
A Cappella
Speaking of mad hatters, enjoy the a cappella talents of UW Redefined and UW MadHatters along with Sturgeon Bay High School’s City Rhythm for an a cappella concert. 7 pm.
Sunday, January 24
Under Milk Wood
Enjoy the eccentricity and lovelorn lyricism of the late Dylan Thomas’ in his beloved 1954 play Under Milk Wood, performed as a staged reading by Rogue Theater. This reading gives an account of a spring day in a small Welsh town. 2 pm.
Moonlight Ski
Enjoy winter’s activities in a different light during Crossroads at Big Creek’s Moonlight Ski on Sunday night. Free ski and snowshoe equipment will be available for use and hot chocolate will be ready to help visitors warm up after the event. 6 – 10 pm.
