Door County Humane Society Announces Dates for Next Therapy Dog Training Class

The Door County Humane Society (DCHS) is pleased to announce the dates for its third Therapy Dog Training Class. The dates for training sessions are June 15, 22 & 29 at 6 pm.

This program takes household dogs with basic obedience skills and trains them to provide affection and comfort to people in nursing homes, hospitals, retirement homes, detention centers, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and other places where a friendly dog’s presence can help improve the lives of people they visit. The program consists of a three-session class to prepare owners and their canine friends for the Therapy Dog Certification Test. Ron Maloney of Peninsula Dog Training generously donates his time to provide training for the class, and Carol Beck of Fox Valley Humane Society administers the certification testing through Therapy Dog International. Once dog and owner pass their test, dogs must also meet all necessary medical criteria. This new team may then apply to TDI for official certification. Once certified, dogs and owners are ready to begin their therapy visits.

The fee is $50 for the three sessions with an additional charge for certification testing and registration to TDI. The class will be held at DCHS, located at 3475 Park Drive, Sturgeon Bay. Class size is limited to 10 dogs, so early registration is recommended. To register, call Rachel Asher at 920.746.1111.
