Door County Humane Society Featured Pets

Door County does not experience animal mistreatment cases to the extent seen in more metropolitan areas, but this area is not immune from this reality. Earlier this year, a cat hoarding situation was resolved in cooperation with Door County law enforcement officials. Now a pair of tiny dogs has been recovered from abandonment.

It was the evening of June 29, and a car was traveling slowly along Mathey Road outside Carlsville. It stopped for a brief moment, and the people inside were seen pushing both a male and female Chihuahua out of the car and then speeding away. From a nearby house, two women rushed to help these bewildered animals, and they were able to catch and hold the trembling female dog. The black-and-tan male dashed away in terror and confusion.

Bringing the little, blond female into the Humane Society the next morning, these kind ladies relayed the whole terrible story. Mark Richard, dogcatcher for the Town of Egg Harbor, was contacted and immediately began looking for the male dog. Richard searched all through the Fourth of July holiday, through all the traffic and fireworks. Neighbors along Mathey Road put out water and food and the little Chihuahua was seen eating, but was too fearful to be caught. Richard persevered and was successful on July 5, catching the little guy in a salmon net.

Now Marbles, female, and Mickey, male, are reunited in one large kennel at the shelter that is brimming with soft bedding, water dishes and dog treats. These Chihuahuas are young; Marbles is six to seven months old. Each dog has been thoroughly checked over, and Marbles has already been spayed. Mickey was neutered the week of July 15.

Chihuahuas are naturally more high-strung than some other breeds, but Marbles and Mickey are settling down and gaining confidence knowing they are safe. It is our belief that they will do best adopted together in a forever home where they can be loved as they should be.

Adoption fee is $150 each or $300 total. All animals are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

The Door County Humane Society, located at 3475 Park Drive (County PD), Sturgeon Bay, is open for adoption Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon – 4 pm. For more information call 920.746.1111 or visit dooranimals.com.
