Door County Land Trust Announces 2016 Tours and Hikes

This summer the Door County Land Trust begins its 30th anniversary of land protection successes, kicked off by a series of tours and hikes that offer in-depth education on the unique interplay of the stone, water, flora and fauna of Door County. The Celebrating Open Spaces series consists of hikes, outings and special events that are free and open to the public, as well as ticketed events that raise vital funds for land protection. Visit DoorCountyLandTrust.org for a schedule of outings or to register online.

Event registration is now open to the general public. New in 2016, the Land Trust is offering the Explorer Series, day-long hiking or kayaking tours that give an in-depth education on various elements of Door County’s ecology and will take registered hikers into lesser-known natural areas. Tours are led by professional naturalist, trained volunteers and Land Trust staff.

Terrie Cooper, Door County Land Trust’s director of land program, says, “To experience the beauty of the land and water is inspiring, but to understand the science and ecology of these sites significantly deepens the awe one has for Door County’s uniqueness. Everyone who loves Door County should have the chance to learn from its most wild places.”

Upcoming events are:

  • June 25, 9-11 am, Wetland Hydrology and Geology Connection Hike, Oak Road Nature Preserve, Egg Harbor;
  • July 1, 4-8 pm, Ecosystem Recovery: Unexpected Adventures Hike and Monologue with Roger Kuhns, Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve, Egg Harbor;
