Door County Legion Baseball Absent in 2023

For the first time since the mid-1960s, there will be no Legion baseball team this summer for players from Door County.

The Ahnapee Trailblazers – the only senior Legion baseball team last season for players from the county’s high schools, as well as Algoma, where the home games were held at Perry Field – did not field a team this summer.

Ahnapee’s coach from last season, Dave Neinas, resigned as Southern Door High School’s head baseball coach slightly more than a month prior to the start of Eagles’ practices this spring.

The Trailblazers formed after Sturgeon Bay’s Legion team was discontinued following the 2014 season. Other Legion teams from Northern Door also existed previously, but none remain today.

With no other Legion baseball teams currently in the county, high school players who are looking to gain experience on the diamond this summer find themselves pursuing other options, such as joining a Door County League or Shoreland Baseball League team that includes older players.

To match up high school players with their peers in the absence of Legion baseball in the county, Gibraltar/Washington Island varsity head coach Jay Kita said there are teams “piggybacking off of our Pony League,” with an informal league running through early July. He said that league includes teams from Door and Kewaunee counties and plays on the same nights as the Pony League teams to be able to use the same umpires.

Kita said the games can be played on fields with lights in Baileys Harbor, Institute, Sturgeon Bay, Algoma and Kewaunee.

County Legion Baseball’s Future

Kita said he hopes Legion baseball will return next year in Door County, and he’s involved in the process to field a future county team. However, he said those plans are preliminary at this point, with the schools where the players could come from and the division size of the team yet to be determined.

Kita said he hopes that forming a Door County Legion baseball team will be finalized later this year so that it can resume play in 2024.
