Library Offers Free STEAM Mystery Bags

Door County Library is embracing hands-on learning and engineering fun with free Spring STEAM Mystery Bags available for pick up at the Baileys Harbor Library through March. The young and the young at heart who complete the project by April 6 will receive a certificate of completion along with display of their creations at the library throughout the month.

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. It is a concept that has been gaining popularity with professions in these fields impacting economic growth and job creation. The library Mystery Bag activity is an engaging way to showcase and grow the talent in our community.

Each bag has a challenge, such as creating a device to attract attention or building a habitat, along with a range of items such as cups, paper plates, string, straws, rubber bands, brass fasteners, egg cartons, and more which invite creativity in problem-solving.

Designers may use any or all of the items in the bag (including the bag itself), and they can combine the recycled materials using scissors, glue or tape. Tracy Opper, Baileys Harbor branch manager, hopes to ignite curiosity and creativity. “I was looking for something that kids or anyone could do over Spring Break, especially those that don’t travel and are looking for things to do. They can work on it at the library or at home, and bring it back to display and receive a certificate.”

Bags are now available. The winter hours at the Baileys Harbor library are 10 am – 4 pm Monday; 1-7 pm Wednesday; 10 am – 4 pm Friday; and 10 am – 1 pm Saturday. Visit DoorCountyLibrary.org to learn more.
