Door County Live Music: Jonathan Byrd to Perform at Last White Gull Concert of the Winter

Folksinger and songwriter Jonathan Byrd will be featured in concert Wednesday, April 1, at the season finale in the winter concert series at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. Tickets for the 8 pm performance are $15.

An award winning songwriter and accomplished guitarist, Jonathan Byrd has appeared on television shows, live radio and nearly 200 live dates per year (including Fish Stock at Camp David here in Door County last summer) since beginning a full time singing career in 2000.

Folk legend Tom Paxton discovered Jonathan Byrd’s music in 2001 and sent him an email, saying, "What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way." Byrd had just released Wildflowers, a recording of simple tales of love and death that seemed to be a hundred years old or more. In 2003 Byrd released his second album, The Waitress, and won the prestigious New Folk competition in Kerrville, TX.

For his third album, Jonathan approached his friends, the critically acclaimed world-music duo known as Dromedary, often featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. The result, The Sea and The Sky, is a vast, poetic suite of music that weds world sounds to deeply rooted folk balladry.

As Byrd evolves as a contemporary artist of increasing influence, his traditional roots are evident in his simple, poetic storytelling and classic flat-pick guitar style.

An optional pre-concert dinner will be served at 6 pm. The menu consists of fettuccine with Italian sausage, tomatoes, basil and parmigiano-reggiano, toasted onion Focaccia, and a fennel orange salad with red onion and olives in citrus vinaigrette. Gelato will be the dessert.

Concert tickets can be purchased at the door, although most concerts are sold out, so advance ticket purchase and reservations for the pre-concert dinners are recommended. Tickets and more information on the concerts and the optional dinners can be obtained by calling the White Gull Inn at 920.868.3517.
